Correro inspires, reflects
Correro has written some highly personal poems, many of which are about real people, many of whom live in the Greenwood and Delta, where he has lived much of his life. The premise of the book is that everyone he meets leaves an impression on him, and vice versa--a tiny seed of an impression.
The book's themes include love, and friendship, politics, and philosopy and inspiration. In an interview, Correro said the poems, which were written between 1987 and 2004, are a reflection of his life and the people who have touched it. He also said those about whom he has written will recongnize themselves.
Some of the poems tell a story--"In a Pile", for instance. This poem tells of Correro's discovery of a beating that was taking place as he walked to a swimming hole in 1972. He happened upon two "town bullies" who were beating up a boy, until one of the bullies spotted the author:
Other pieces delve into feelings. In "Fear", for example, he poses all those universally agonizing questions everyone asks himself or herself upon meeting the someone who may--or may not--be the one.
Several of the poems are quite adult in nature, often with subtle symbolism or nuance, but nevertheless for grown-ups to decipher and appreciate.
Correro's slim soft cover volume of poetry is only 60 pages, but many of the verses will touch hearts, minds and souls of local readers.
He has plans for publishing other books, including a series of children books, a second volume of poetry and a murder mystery that takes place in Greenwood and moves from the 1960's until the present day--something else to look forward to from Correro.
